The beautiful game?
Watching the England - Hungary game on tuesday, I asked myself: 'Since when has diving in the box been accepted?''Accepted?' I hear you ask, 'Never!'
Why then, did both the commentators and Gary Lineker and his pals decide to turn a blind eye to Steven Gerrard's shameless and obvious dive 5 yards into the Hungarians box, almost resulting in a penalty against the already struggling Hungarian team? Ian Wright even had the cheek to state 'They would have done it to us if we hadn't, so he did the right thing'.
Sorry Mr Wright, but I believe you are wrong.
For years I have been infuriated by the diving Portugese and Italians and even Argentinians (watch out for that sweeping statement right there...) who lower the tone of the traditionally honourable game. Once the English start diving, thats the end for me. I could always rejoice in the fact that we, the English, were on a higher plateau than these ham actors, but not any more.
It's not like we need to dive, like we have no skill; Gerrard in my opinion is one of our best players. Lets not turn the next generation on Hollywood stars into International football quality material. So come on Gerrard, get your act together and don't take any more tips off of those Italians!
